What's with all these tablets being advertised in landscape??

I've had the first ipad since it came out last year and I'd say my Portrait to landscape usage ratio is like 70% portrait / 30% landscape.

I view webpages, read the WSJ, NYPost, books, ipod etc.. all in portrait.

Landscape is for tv shows / movies and some games.

Why are these tablets all designed as if the user is going to hold them landscape 90% of the time? Are magazines designed to be held landscape? I don't get these horizontal tablets.

He was referring to my post in which I was referring to MWSF '07, not the WWDC.

Ah I see ... thought it was about WWDC 2006 my bad.

I still don't think we'll se a full release at MWSF but I think the date will be announced.

Yeah I don't think we will see 10.5 released at MWSF '07 (thinking CQ2 2007) but after I get back from WWDC I may have a different understanding of the current state of 10.5.

If I had a girlfriend, I would hope I would love her enough to protect her from the physical and psychological risks that come with non-marital sex. The best way for me to do that is for my hypothetical girlfriend and me to be celibate before marriage.

Sacramentally same-sex "marriage" isn't marriage. Neither is merely civil marriage of any sort. If I understand what the Catholic Church's teachings about marriage merely civil, it teaches non-sacramental marriage, whether same-sex or opposite-sex, is legal fornication.

    A) Maybe your feelings on the situation would be different if you actually had a girlfriend.

    B) I'm interested to learn what exactly the physical and psychological risks of non-marital sex are?

    Excellent post.

Yes, sex in merely civil marriage is fornication

    You're kidding. Right?

Lol. So many kid Apple fanboys.
iOS is clearly outdated if compared to Honeycomb and QNX.
The iPad 2 is nice, but it needs more RAM. Multitasking is just terrible with few RAM and bad OS processes handling.

Multitasking in iOS is sometimes a joke, specially if you're web browsing and using some chat app (like IM+, BeeJive etc.).

I'm glad that RIM and Samsung come with those prices.
Next months will be crucial for me to decide the successor of my iPad 1.

Well it's back to the future for all of us. Remember when the Mac was going 64-bit with the introduction of the G5 PowerMac on June 23, 2003? Only more than three years later and we're doing it all over again thanks to Yonah's 7 month retrograde.

    Can we also expect, ?

    -Backlit keys
    -Brighter display, colors, and IPS
    -HD Facetime

All would be greatly appreciated along with the Sandy Bridge

fingers crossed for no Over-heating issues, you know how those turbo speeds can get and how they've treated the 13'' Pros

I might not expect IPS, doesnt it draw more power than TN LCDs?

but to say that intel forced apple to use the IGP is not correct imo.

No indeed, it's not. Intel forced the whole OEM industry to use their IGP, not just Apple. ;)

No matter how you slice it, for some applications, IGPs make sense. Intel cut out the competence from that market with their shenanigans. And now the consumers pays for it with sub-par graphics processors.

I can't wait for Monday. I'll be working that day, so I am going to try to watch the keynote before reading any updates. I even have the Quicktime Events page bookmarked. :D I figured I would be more surprised by taking this route.

This is the first WWDC I'm really looking forward to, mainly because of what we're going to see... Leopard in action! :D

Edit: Peace, that's not entirely true. None of us know whether Apple will release Cinema Displays with iSights built-in. I'd say it is unlikely, but you never know until it actually happens.

They aren't. The entire music business revenues are down 40% since 2001. Sales are down hugely. I can tell you from representing these artists that all the money is down too.

Are you spending as much on music as you did years ago?

Of course not. Most of the music sucks to be honest nowadays. I prefer the underground stuff from emusic, not big label stuff.

For example, Jay-Z's new album sucks compared to Reasonable Doubt.
The same with Nas nowadays compared to Illmatic.
    The same with Mobb Deep.
    etc. etc.

Get the picture? Artists who are hungry in the beginning put out a good album. Then they fall off the earth.

It's only the music industry that is losing quality. The only album this year that's from a major label that's any good this year is DJ Primo's production on Christina Aguilera's album and that's it period.

    Sad, isn't it?

Probably the same way it is in scalable transactional databases that use multi-versioning concurrency protocols (e.g. PostgreSQL and Oracle). No data is over-written, and every "update" actually creates a new record version.

Lots of ways it COULD be implemented. Looks at Suns new file system ZFS. It is basically "Copy on Write". With a file system you can do things even fancier then with a DBMS. For example a "block" (i-node) exists physicaly on the disk only once but it could be maped into any numbr of files. If a file in only an orderd set of block numbers then to copy a copy all you need to copy is the set of numbers which is on the order of 1000 times shorter then the data itself.

But on the other hand you _want_ the data to be physically copied if it is to be backed up to an external drive.

Some time ago Apple was talking with Sun about using ZFS in OSX but I don't think anything came out of it. I suspect Apple wrote this themselves

The problem is not that I can't figure out how Apple did this but that I can think of about a half dozen ways they could have done this.

According to the school's website (http://www.chc.edu/News/2011/February/statement_regarding_jim_st_george/), he was not fired as the OP's article suggests. Rather, his contract was not renewed. AFAIK, adjunct instructors do not enjoy the same privileges as tenured professors. If his contract ran out and was simply not renewed, then that's that, unless it can be argued that the college has some legal obligation to offer a new contract.

well assuming what you say is true then every legal right to do so. Hell it could of been that he should never of been hired and HR screwed up and hired someone that did not meet all the requirements. They honor the contract up until it was time to renew it and they did not intend to renew it to fix the mistake.

I will say we can expect a lot of adjunct instructors/professors to be out of work soon because univerisities are being forced to cut cost and those are the first ones to go.

The Woodcrest processors have been put through their paces pretty well on the supercomputing lists, and their Achille's heal is the memory subsystem. Current generation AMD Opterons still clearly outscale Woodcrest in real-world memory bandwidth with only two cores. Unless Intel pulls a rabbit out of their hat with their memory architecture issues when the quad core is released, AMDs quad core is going to embarrass them because of the memory bottleneck. And AMD is already starting to work on upgrading their already markedly superior memory architecture.

This is one of the drawbacks of using a server CPU on the desktop. In lights-off Xserve this would not matter as most of the data is already cached in memory.

I think there might be lights out for future MacPro Xeons if AMD where to catch up in the race.

i agree with this on one condition:

Universal agrees to give up its right to prosecute anyone who owns an iPod for piracy.

i.e. if I buy an iPod, then I can pirate Universal's catalogue all I want because I have effectively already paid for their content.

a few bucks is a small price to pay to get access to everything they got

One wonders why it hasn't been used in a Court of Law. :p Stress that the same law that applies to cassette tape players and the record function should be the same as downloading music to use on cds (to which they paid for, and to which money is added to CD/DVD sales to make up for pirated music).

I actually thought looking at a history of where my phone has been on a map was kinda cool. Bummer.

Since I'm neither a criminal nor paranoid, I thought it was kind of cool/interesting too.
