Because they fear the iPod and what it — and its ecosystem — may potentially evolve into; becoming a platform in its own right, particularly with the convergence of multimedia in the home.

Yes, I though about it... It was a rhetorical question of sorts, anyway. ;)

I'm also figuring they are afraid of the "Halo effect" (pun intended :D), as that'd explain the whole shebang. They were ALWAYS afraid of losing their leadership on the PC market, and that their iron-like grip would turn loose. The problem is, they grew lazy, and are preety much aware of that, as their delays in delivering Vista prove.

"So, let's just try to find some other markets to tap into, 'just in case' ", they probably thought...

That explains the XBox, the WebTV, Windows CE, Windows Mobile, and whatnot. The Zune is just the latest iteration of that behaviour, and more specifically an attempt at stopping the advance of Apple, the iPod, and ESPECIALLY the Mac/OS X platform (while your theory certainly seems interesting, iTV won't be such a threat to Microsoft as it'll most likely be fully compatible with a Windows PC running iTunes, as are the iPod and Airport Express... But it's a valid point, nonetheless  ). iPod+iTunes users can buy a Mac and keep using their nice Apple gear (and even Windows if they really must), while becoming hooked up to the rest of their iLives at the same time, whereas Zune users... well, they can hook up in basements and squirt around, and that preety much sums it up. Or they can suck up and throw them in their drawers and buy an iPod "the next time", which is the most likely scenario.

So this seems to be just a desperation move by M$, in anticipation, but the media (or the market, for that matter) doesn't really get it... In preety much the same way that they didn't get it in when the iPod was initially launched. <manic speech> Five years from now, we'll be laughing our a**es off at yet some other random M$ failure, and fondly remembering the Zune as the beginning of the end. Muhahahahaha </manic speech>... :p

There is no such thing as a European Command run by Europeans, any more than there is an African Command run by an African. They are both branches of the US military command. Your comment that "even" the European Command was run by an American was foolish in the extreme.

So now that I pwned you you still try to twist words to get weasle your way out.

Scroll up and this is what I said:
"He even says that European Command is headed by a US Admiral."

    That's a lot different than:
"Even the European Command was run by an American"

In other words...it's NOT handed over to NATO.

Why don't you just face it. The US blows crap up and all of the "NATO" nations expect the US to handle the brunt of the decisions AND the work behind the scenes and that YOUR nation shoots 2 tomahawks and takes credit for the "massive assault" even though it hurts your pride to believe so or some crap! :D

You see, beneath all of that hippie exterior of yours, you are secretly a warmonger, you just don't like it when most of the damage is done by the US instead of by someone more close to home! I knew it! ;)

This is very cool, however I think the article says it all:

"unless you do work normally relegated to high-end workstations, perform massively multitasking workloads, or just want the bragging rights, eight cores is definitely overkill...at least for now."

Of course at some point 8-cores will be the standard and will be slow compared to the 32-core systems, but until that happens, I think quad-core would suit me just fine. Hell, I'm getting by with a single core G4 right now with no complaints, so this isn't a big deal for me in the grand scheme of things! ;)

I'm glad Apple is thinking for themselves and leaving the purists behind as they adopt newer, better ways of doing things. The idea of installing from a disc image is ridiculous. Anyone I've explained it to can understand it, but always mention there must be a better way. "Install" is much better than launching a disc image, opening an applications window, and then dragging the icon over to the other window.

Fair comment. Disk images and dragging apps into the application folder makes sense to me, but I can see how it might confuse new users. (I like the control of where I put my apps. For instance, when I am testing various trial apps I prefer to put them in categorised folders rather than litter my application folder with apps I may never use again or even remember what they do.)

Pre- App Store we typically had this or a drawn out installation wizard, but nothing in-between. Why not a simple one window installer that offers to place the self-contained app package in the application folder by default? It could have an advanced button for more options, but keep it ultra simple and fast for most users.

Perhaps this would allow me to play a large map on Civ4 without the terrible huge long pauses...

It depends whether Civ IV was coded to take advantage of multiple cores or not. If it is indeed a multi-threaded app, then fine, it could probably share the load across all 8 cores, however this may not be the case as the app may not be able to to take advanatge of all 8 cores. Not sure, guess you'd need to test it out...

Microsoft owns nothing of Apple, just to make that clear, and of course they don't Apple to succeed... they want it to sink. :)

The fact that M$ owns a portion of Apple is a myth, not true.

That block of graphite at the top should contain your Address bar, Back/Forward and search bar. DP2 autohides the tab bar and the favorites bar until you bring your mouse to the top of the screen. There's a screenshot of it earlier in the thread.

Yeah, I'm aware that it should contain those thing. ;) It's just that mine is blank, and the option to "hide toolbar" doesn't make it go away either. (Hiding the toolbar does continue to work in non-fullscreen mode though.)

I do notice though that when I should have a tabs bar, that blank graphite bar does expand when I move the mouse to the top of the screen as you say. It's still all blank though. Clicking around on the blank toolbar also doesn't behave as if I'm clicking on buttons that just happen to be invisible. I also can't drag buttons onto the blank bar from the Customize Toolbar options and have them show up there.

Oh well. I thought it was funny and it didn't/doesn't seem like anyone else has had it happen or mentioned it. Other applications in fullscreen mode seem to work just fine.

    this is crap,

no one in their right mind would make something with 0 ports, you have to at a bare minimum have an audio out.

Hmm maybe they could get around this by shipping bluetooth headphones with it.

And the no-plug dock charging sounds good too.

Imagine a ultra portable macbook with no ports.

It would have a docking station with a lot of ports in the dock but it would all wirelessly be transfered to the macbook.

No clicking into the dock. Just set it down.

If the dock could be integrated into the desk it could look like you are just setting it on the desk.

But it is wirelessly sending power and signals with the dock which has usb, firewire, large HD, optical drive, headphone jacks, and other ports that are hidden under the desk.

Edit: just realized that in the time I took to reply someone else already pointed out bluetooth headphones.

The switcheasy color looks good, and it's cheap, but this griffin one (http://www.griffintechnology.com/products/flexgrip-action-touch4g) also looks good and this Speck pixelskin (http://www.speckproducts.com/ipod-audio/ipod-touch-4th-gen/pixelskin-black-1501.html) too, but the griffin one seems to be shock/drop proof (at least more so than the other 2).
Well, they're all silicone (not sure about the Griffin Flex Grip), but the Griffin seems to be more thick. It probably would have more protection than the others, but Switcheasy has the Jellybean Home Button, and tons of accessories.

    For me, it would go:

    Repeat after me:

The monopoly is not Windows. The monopoly is MS Word.

Word? Word's being replaced more and more by e-mail. I used to type my notes in GMail and sometimes I write essays in GMail and just copy it over to Word for formatting. AutoSave and anywhere recall is handy.

Excel on the other hand... Google and Apple are lagging there. Google Docs & Spreadsheets are still very slow, and a bit counter-intuitive.

Too bad we can't get an occational mention on the front page of this here website! ARN, are you out there, hint, hint... I'd write something to post on the front page but I'm not a good writer :D

yeah that would help. but i think if we keep new threads and posts going in here then people will see it with forum spy and get more people involved. i mean just the little we've been posting here in the last few has gotten more people going. just look at me, you, scifrog, and others who really started stepping it up.
mc68k stepped it up also, but he's been active on here more in the past than we have (not to take anything away from him).

we just need 4JNA to come back!
