I told her to wait it out until 9.25 at the earliest then buy it.

She has been waiting with me ever since I found out about merom in June. She broke after it wasn't announced this Tuesday.

She's going to feel regret I fear when it's announced in 10 days.If she doesn't open it, she can return it for full refund up to 14 days after she gets it. But she should understand Apple needs to stagger new model releases weekly, even when they are all ready, in order to maximize press coverage. It's Marketing 101.

Another reason for the MBP delay is the supply of Merom processors to Apple is growing at a rate that favors iMacs first then MBP later this month. Apple must build tens of thousands of new MBPs in 3 different configurations before they can announce them as "for sale today".

She can also come to her senses and phone Apple and cancel her order. It is quite irrational to order or buy a MBP right now.I ordered my MacBook Pro this morning!!!!!!!

anyway I went on the website to see the ship date as soon as I could and here are the details...

    MBPRO 17/2.16 CTO
    2.16GHz Intel Core Duo
    2GB 667 DDR2 SDRAM- 2x1GB
    120GB Serial ATA Drive@5400rpm
    Widescreen Display
    SD 8x(DVD+R DL/DVD+/-RW/CD-RW)
    BkLit Keyboard/Mac OS
    Airport Extreme Card&BT

    Estimated Ship Date
Sep 26, 2006 (wow that date looks familiar?!?!)

    Arrival Date
    Oct 3, 2006

Either way if I get it with Merom or not I'm opening that damn box as soon as I see it.You're breaking my balls Taylor.

This is excellent evidence Apple is not shipping any more Yonah MacBook Pros. Good catch Taylor. That's perfect. What you are going to get will be a 2.33GHz C2D for sure. You might want to upgrade to the Seagate 160BG HD though. :p

    http://images.macrumors.com/article/2011/04/23/171415-background.jpg

A finding earlier this month (http://osxdaily.com/2011/04/02/new-mt-fuji-wallpaper-in-mac-os-x-lion-developer-preview-2/) by OSXDaily has generated some speculation about Apple's plans for "Retina" display Macs. The Mac OS X Lion Developer Preview 2 released in late March (http://www.macrumors.com/2011/03/30/apple-releases-mac-os-x-lion-developer-preview-2/) included an ultra-high resolution version of the background desktop image at a resolution of 3200x2000. A few observers noted (http://punchingin.com/chasing-the-6-4-megapixel-unicorn/) that this is higher than any Apple display has ever supported, generating speculation (http://theelaborated.net/blog/2011/4/13/consider-the-retina-display.html) that Apple is preparing for "Retina" display Macs in the near future.

We had previously reported (http://www.macrumors.com/2011/02/24/mac-os-x-lion-building-in-support-for-super-high-resolution-retina-monitors/) that Mac OS X Lion has made some under-the-hood changes opening the door to such super-high resolution displays. Taking cues from iOS, Apple has reportedly built in support for what it calls "HiDPI display modes". These HiDPI modes allow developers to supply 2x-enlarged images to support double-high resolution displays. Like the iPhone 4's Retina Display, this means that user interface elements will remain the same size, but everything will be twice the resolution and therefore twice as detailed. Now, MacMagazine.com.br has found (http://macmagazine.com.br/2011/04/23/macs-com-telas-retina-nao-sao-duvida-quando-eles-chegarao-sim-ainda-e-uma-incognita/) that Apple is already starting to include other super high resolution artwork in Lion. They found several icons stored as 1024x1024 sizes, up from a previous maximum of 512x512.

No, he's talking about the drawing that shows something like a 24" iMac than can be swivelled down on your desktop from it's normal upright position to a slightly inclined position (like an iPad on it's new triangle smart cover back rest) and then you lift your arms up and use the 24" screen like an iPad.

    Seems such a bad idea.

I like the idea of a giant touch screen in the surface of a desk, for some uses, but I'm really unsure about swinging an iMac screen around and sticking your hands all over it.

    This image here: http://www.alltouchtablet.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/touchscreen-apple-imac.jpg

Yeah, neat idea conceptually...but in practice I would personally rather not have my iMac look like a school bus window:p

Believe it or not though we are still gigabit to our SAN and while Fiber Channel may be awesome in this scenario do you not think Thunderbolt would have the throughput for say, a DAS box?

Direct Attached Storage is a pain to manage : "Hey, XY server needs more storage space... oh wait, the array is full, we need to purchase a new array for it... too bad we can't use YZ's array which only has 2 bays occupied...".

Centralized storage arrays with LUNs solves all of these issues. Running out of storage ? Present a new LUN and just plug it in to whatever volume manager you use and grow your existing filesystem, all with 0 downtime or even having to physically connect anything to the box.

For data centers, Thunderbolt is a non-contender.

a lb. of butter is still called a lb. of butter here in Canada

When growing up in Europe in the 70s a pound was simply redefined as 500 g. For most purposes the 10% error is insignificant.

Volume units (1 liter = 1 quart) work similarly, and 1-2 liter containers are fairly common even here in the US.

It is unclear why only Apple's iPod line is cited in the report, as virtually identical lithium-polymer batteries are used in the iPhone and iPad. Similar technology is also used in Apple's notebook batteries, although those units may not utilize the pliable polymer manufactured by Kureha in their construction.

Well pick up the phone and ask them, or investigate this somehow. It's unclear in as much as you haven't done your job of researching this...

What crack-addled mind seriously thinks it'd be sensible or probable that Apple would come out with a new iPad 5 months after... coming out with a new iPad?

Perhaps one who thinks Apple are going to be far more aggressive with the iPad than they were with the phone. They watched Android steamroll over their early lead. Maybe they don't want to see that happen again. Add one more month to that figure and you have a twice yearly refresh. Not that insane, if the refresh is small.

Upgrade the screen and/or add NFC, and you have a legitimate iPad 3 that is not so far away from the iPad 2 as to:

    a) require significant re-engineering.
    b) cause the stupids to freak out that their perfectly decent iPad 1/2 just got made obsolete by the sheer existence of this modestly improved V3.

The pay-off is that new buzz is created going into the holiday season, and crucially keeps the impression of Apple being just out of reach of the competition.

Or perhaps you thinks that Asus and the like wont flood the market with just good enough devices at a cheap enough price point to make consumers question whether the $500+ device is really so much better than the ~$300 device on the shelves at WalMart?

Also, the cloud is only as good as your connection, which is usually less than wonderful, especially with every frickin app in the appstore trying to stream everything it does over wifi, not to mention, god forbid, you actually have other computers in the house trying to send data over your network too. Open that physical USB bus up already! ...or better yet light peak connectivity...

You really don't seem to do shades of grey well. My iPad continues to show my calendar just fine when away from my WiFi. When it's in range of my WiFi however, it just has the ability to auto sync changes. Given that, what exactly are you ranting about here?

I would hope that creating a bootable DVD/flash drive would be part of the installation process.

How is it handled now for developers with the Lion preview?

So far you must enter a redemption code in the app store which allows you to download Lion.
If you want to install it on multiple computers you can copy the install file to another Mac but it needs to use the same app store account info.
I haven't found a way to burn or make it bootable since they don't offer a full dmg file on the developer page like they did with SL.

That's because Microsoft copied Apple (or NeXT really.) The NeXT dock predates the taskbar in Windows, and at the time a lot of people felt that's where Microsoft got the taskbar from.

If you go back to Windows 3.1, no taskbar. And then suddenly Windows 95 which shipped after NeXTStep, there is a taskbar.

Yes, and Apple tried to sue Microsoft for this and failed. Now they want to fail again. Sore losers.

of course they're adopting core 2 duo's... duh, so is every computer maker out there. intel is trying to transition very rapidly into core 2 duo and phasing out the "old" core duo. to do this they've priced the core 2 duos at exactly the same cost as the core duo's with the same clock speed/configuration. you would be stupid not to adopt. i just hope apple doesn't surcharge and tout core 2 duo as a monumental upgrade for the laptops, becase it's only incremental at best. the real gain is the conroe on the desktop processor. as long as the FSB in the portables isn't 1,000 mhz, merom won't be that much faster than yonah.

Maybe now they realize that even companies like Toyota want some more ways to create stuff. Better?

And it isn't about the theme... It could be just a black screen with the text "Buy it." But it would be a jailbreak content made by a big company. It means something.

Like i stated in one of the other threads, this would be a great buy for Teachers, Artist, Photographers, or anyone else on the go. But, i think it would also be better if it was like IBM's tablet PC; one where you have be a laptop one minute, then a tablet the next minute.

I expect Tuesday will be a good day for the fight against prostate cancer (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=32726).

Other than that, who knows? :D I don't expect the thing I lust after -- a Flash-based sub-notebook -- to be quite ready for primetime by tomorrow. :( Or to have anything to do with the theme of the announcement.

    I'm betting some combination of:

    1) Video streaming router
    2) Enhancement to Front Row
    3) Videos being sold in iTMS
    4) Enhancement of iPods in relation to these features plus perhaps some silent upgrades like capacity on the Nano

A 2.66GHz CPU is about $400 more expensive than a 2.0GHz, BTO only takes $300 off, so the base config is the best choice. There is a gap, no single processor mac pro, not like Apple's sale strategy. Either Cornore mac pro or iMac will be great.

No, it's "TWO 2.66GHz CPUs are about $800 more expensive than TWO 2.0GHz.....".

AGPS and it helps with tower switching while actually using the phone. Android has the same type of file (and likely other phones before it) for the same reasons. The only difference is that Apple left out a time based truncation feature.

Incorrect. It makes absolutely no sense to store ALL locations/WiFi data/timestamps indefinitely for what you described. The data should be processed and pruned to be used efficiently.

find me a Tablet that costs less than a small notebook. No, you won't find it, sorry...
    <snip>
And where are the tablets? NOWHERE, because they only fit the bills of us freaks desiring a nice pen-based Mac...
    <snip>
Construction companies have used PDAs for years, including the Newton...and that's why a mere evolution of such products is more than enough.
You may have to consider that when there's a rumour "Apple is making a tablet".... that they may be making something that is not a pen-based Mac, and hence is cheaper than a small notebook. It may even be an evolution of the Newton.

You seem to spew a lot of reasons that tablets haven't worked in the past. I agree if Apple does the same as other tablet makers have in the past, it won't work. But I think we all agree with that don't we?

ps. No point abusing others' ideas.
