Too early i think for 10.4.8, replace it with iTunes 7 and i think your set ;)

Still not sure they will distract from the movie stuff with MBP, MB or other hardware updates except the streaming video stuff (as it ties into movies)

Actually you're right, also knowing Apple, the truth is we won't get MBP/MB updates.

Half of the keynote will go towards demoing the Movie store and pitching it as much as humanly possible & and the other half will go towards iPod updates and one more thing...media device. Thats it. Its the classic keynote we've all come to know. As someone said...you never get all the marbles.

Fact is, we may not see a MBP/MB update till late October. This way, the new iMacs/iPods/Movie store get enough attention first.

Thankfully my AT&T coverage is so weak, there is no way Apple can track me.

    So there!

    Racist. :p

Kidding. I'm think they'll go with a high end black model eventually. Maybe give it a better video card or something to justify another hundred bucks or so. I'm hoping they do the same with the MacBooks. Maybe a new lowend pro, or a high end nonpro with a built-in video card. That would justify a $1500 purchase over a $1000 one to me.

yeah i would love a MBP with:

    Black Case
    Better Graphics Chip
Blu-ray drive (perhaps? apple is cutting edge in HD this would solidify it)

Too late for that: http://www.spokeo.com/Holy Guacamole. But I'm not worried. It doesn't know my favorite pizza. Yet.

And in my case - not much fuel for password hackers to know my challenge question answers, but the fact is that more and more info about us can be reverse engineered from our digital "tracks" to build up quite a picture.

Speaking of pictures, I was just hearing that it's possible to gather other bits, e.g., from EXIF data on Flickr, Picasa, etc., including user annotations, avatar names from forums, etc. Also mentioned was a technique of "surrounding" your IP address from the servers it interacts with over time to pin its location down. And there are a growing number of other sources - e.g., facebook (besides what most of us make public there, just start some stupid app that requires "access to your basic information" and give the app away for the info) and other social and dating sites.

The "net" result (so to speak) is that little to none of the data may compromise you on its own - but when assembled could be quite a portfolio of info about you (and your associations and patterns of associations) that could be used to hack your ID, track you and more.

Not to mention if you live in any major city and go to stores, public buildings, etc., you're being photographed many, many times per day. (In London, up to thousands of times per day, e.g.)

But for all the arguing in the larger media and here, the simple question of why THIS file exists, and what its real intended use is hasn't yet been directly addressed by nearly anyone, especially anyone in a position to actually know.

It's not there for no reason and didn't program itself to exist. That doesn't pass any Occam's Razor or smell test. So what the hell IS the story with it??

Meanwhile, for get off the grid wishers, your moment of zen:

Transmit the message, to the receiver
Hope for an answer some day
I got three passports, couple of visas
Don't even know my real name

High on a hillside, trucks are loading
    Everything's ready to roll, I, I
I sleep in the daytime, I work in the nigh time
I might not ever get home

This ain't no party, this ain't no disco
    This ain't no fooling around
    This ain't no mud club, or C. B. G. B.
I ain't got time for that now

This ain't no party, this ain't no disco
    This ain't no fooling around
No time for dancing, or lovey dovey
I ain't got time for that now

Heard about Houston? Heard about Detroit?
    Heard about Pittsburgh, PA?
You ought to know not to stand by the window
    Somebody see you up there

I got some groceries, some peanut butter
To last a couple of days
But I ain't got no speakers
    Ain't got no headphones
Ain't got no records to play

And let's not forget one thing: Apple moved from 680x0 to PPC and PPC to Intel because each time, the new CPU series offered a major improvement from the previous one. Today, Intel is the biggest innovator across the board in high-end CPUs - for desktop, server and laptops. There is no one on the horizon who can meet or beat Intel.

My thoughts exactly. Even more so, when Apple left PPC they had huge problems getting faster processors from IBM. PowerBook G5 anyone? Windows based Intel systems were crushing Mac's like crazy and Apple couldn't do anything about it. Hence, the switch to Intel. Now we have zero problems so why switch to something that makes no sense.

And please, for the love of all things holy, retire the Powerbook G5 "joke". It never was funny and it certainly isn't funny now.

THANK YOU!! I COMPLETELY AGREE!!!! :D

Well that would be an awesome upgrade (having a monitor going up to 3200 x 2000!) but I will have to wait until 3rd party (NEC, EIZO) make a nice matte version later down the road.

Should make for some amazing iMac upgrades in the near future though!

I find this hard to believe.

Apple must have realized it now has to fight for market share in the smartphone market.

A 2-year contract doesn't stop iPhone 4 users from moving to the iPhone 5. Many people are on 2 year contracts, but are also on family plans. It's not unheard of for a parent to use an upgrade and hand their old phone down to a kid. Small businesses get 18 month upgrades from AT&T. Let's not forget the 3GS users and anyone whose iPhone 4 has broken.

It's a huge mistake not to update the phone. If only incremental, it's free profit for Apple. In many ways, iPhones (and Apple products in general) are status symbols. People buy the latest not out of need for improved specs, but rather for the ability to say "Look at my new Apple gadget". And while I do love the Retina Display and the 720p recording, to be honest, the fact that there was a new form factor-easily identifying me as having the new phone on launch day-was a part of the reason I ditched my 3GS for the new iPhone 4.

I had to click on this to see how the **** so many pages could be on a simple math problem. To those who got 288, kudos. To those who got 2, you're wrong. Sorry, no offense, but it's very simple math. Fivetoedsloth, dukebound85, others are right, with multiplication and division (or addition and subtraction) it goes from left to right.

Also, if you trust your Mac more than google, copy and paste the question into mac's Grapher program. It displays it correctly (with the 48 above the 2 and 9+3 off to the side) and gives you 288.

i intend to get mine on a disc rather then a download.

Why can't you just download it and back it up on a USB key, or a thousand USB keys?

Give me one good reason why you can't do that. If you're posting on Macrumors you have enough bandwidth to get it, just may have to wait a few minutes.

Sounds good. Hope it happens for those waiting for it.

Yeah, so we can all shut up and be happy. :)

In the last couple of weeks I was predicting Photokina, but I had changed my mind yesterday, thinking of the new iMacs as precedent--release the iMac, follow with an event the next week. Release the Macbook Pro C2D (Tuesday the 19th), follow with an event the next week (Monday the 25th.) I still kind of stand behind this, but I'll be happy either way, though I would be happier if they released them on the 19th.

Though the Macshrine site lists Photokina as happening on September 14--yesterday.

The Photokina event on September 14th

What's with everybody thinking this will be too US centric? I'm guessing a possible music download service will be USA only at first, but in all honesty the European and Asian cell phone markets are about 3 years ahead of the US as far as technology goes. Chances are, Apple will make it a GSM technology phone, which is actually quite international!

Even so, the USA is in dire need of a decent cell phone. The fact that the Razr is so popular says it all. The Razr is a terrible phone (along with most other Motorolas for that matter). And the rest of the selection available is pretty sad too!

Personally I'm hoping for a smart phone of some sort, preferably with a full qwerty keyboard. But I'm not holding my breath.

couldn't Samsung simply get back at Apple by NOT making Apple's stuff? I mean, come on.

You would think that on the surface. People asked, if Apple wants to kill Flash, why doesn't Adobe just kill, Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects, Dreamwever, Premiere and InDesign on the Mac, that would cripple Apple as a creative platform for designers, well, Adobe does not want to kill more than 50% of its revenue stream.....the answer is money! Samsung loves the profitability of making Apples stuff! They do not want to lose that golden goose.

I can buy an iPhone without contract and I don't live in Europe.

    This is a world phone.

    that's not the point?

Still doesn't mean we have to make sure nothing we say fails to take into account the existence of every potential Apple customer. And that anyone should self-righteously "correct" any statements that do. IOW in the context of this discussion summer ends in September. What relevance does the existence of different season schedules have when the U.S. company references northern hemisphere seasons?

recent AppleInsider story[/url] had indicated that Intel may have plans to move up Merom's formal launch to next Monday, July 23rd, to coincide with the Core 2 Duo Desktop variant ("Conroe") launch.

Monday is the 24th. This is the third post on this. How long does it take for an admin to correct a simple mistake?

Am I the only one who thinks it's not a big deal? Your carrier tracks your phone all the ff-ing time. Google has the SSL beta now, but until recently they tracked your every move.

And with the patriot act the telecos let the government move in and access data without warrants. Yet everyone seems fine with this. However, the instant your phone has a database of cell phone towers it is something nefarious. Sigh. It really would be nice if the real privacy concerns were addressed and not this low hanging fruit of a cache on your phone.

    Not legally.

    That's NOT the context here.

And don't tell me you take the EULA seriously.

I have never done that, but EULA is a joke. Nobody cares. Not even Apple.

I doubt the truth of this rumor, but it is still interesting nonetheless. One question it raises: How will Apple handle paying customers' subscriptions that expire after the point this takes effect?
