This is all making sense to me now.
When they said that a white iPhone 4 would come out in the Spring. I thought to myself, why in the world would they release a white iP4 this late in the cycle when the iPhone 5 would be out in just a couple more months???
Why you ask? BECAUSE THERE IS NOT GOING TO BE AN IPHONE 5 THIS YEAR!
    THAT'S WHY!
    OMG!
I'm on a 3GS and have been waiting for iP5 to upgrade!:mad::mad:

up the chips in the MBPs and up the speeds in the MBs?

seems likely to me.Seems highly unlikely to me because above 2GHz, Merom's are way too expensive to go into MacBooks. But I would love to see 2GHz Meroms go into MacBooks sooner than later.

On the MBP front, we should see them go up to 2.16 and 2.33 GHz Meroms very soon.

    just remember everyone...

all the rumor sits speculated the 23" imac (really 24") would be revealed at the "Showtime" event. apple fooled them all and released it a week early!

let's hope the same thing happens for our mbp's. here's to next tuesday! :D

if you want a completely new MBP, then i don't think u would want that to be released on next Tuesday because if they do quiet update, u won't see changes.

So nobody has answered yet whether this requires you to reinstall Lion or if you just install an "update" through the Mac App Store somehow. I am not at home so I can't test it out myself yet.

And I don't expect that any Chinese business man pays close to what they should on paper. We have loopholes in the tax code. They have loopholes in general.

Given you get the death penalty for tax evasion I would expect people would be pretty keen to pay their taxes.

    Image (http://www.macrumors.com/2011/04/23/apple-including-ultra-high-resolution-artwork-in-lion-for-possible-retina-displays/)

    Image (http://images.macrumors.com/article/2011/04/23/171415-background.jpg)

A finding earlier this month (http://osxdaily.com/2011/04/02/new-mt-fuji-wallpaper-in-mac-os-x-lion-developer-preview-2/) by OSXDaily has generated some speculation about Apple's plans for "Retina" display Macs. The Mac OS X Lion Developer Preview 2 released in late March (http://www.macrumors.com/2011/03/30/apple-releases-mac-os-x-lion-developer-preview-2/) included an ultra-high resolution version of the background desktop image at a resolution of 3200x2000. A few observers noted (http://punchingin.com/chasing-the-6-4-megapixel-unicorn/) that this is higher than any Apple display has ever supported, generating speculation (http://theelaborated.net/blog/2011/4/13/consider-the-retina-display.html) that Apple is preparing for "Retina" display Macs in the near future.

We had previously reported (http://www.macrumors.com/2011/02/24/mac-os-x-lion-building-in-support-for-super-high-resolution-retina-monitors/) that Mac OS X Lion has made some under-the-hood changes opening the door to such super-high resolution displays. Now, MacMagazine.com.br has found (http://macmagazine.com.br/2011/04/23/macs-com-telas-retina-nao-sao-duvida-quando-eles-chegarao-sim-ainda-e-uma-incognita/) that Apple is already starting to include other super high resolution artwork in Lion. They found several icons stored as 1024x1024 sizes, up from a previous maximum of 512x512.

    Image (http://images.macrumors.com/article/2011/04/23/171147-23-lion_appstore.png)

    Click for full-size

Of course, this support for super high resolution displays is only the first step, but suggests Apple is planning ahead when the hardware becomes available.

Article Link: Apple Including Ultra High Resolution Artwork in Lion for Possible Retina Displays? (http://www.macrumors.com/2011/04/23/apple-including-ultra-high-resolution-artwork-in-lion-for-possible-retina-displays/)

Oh please. Give me a break! Do you nitwits HONESTLY think there will be retina display Macs in the near future? It's total BS. If they did, the cost of said Macs would be prohibitive to the general public. Why do you think there aren't retina display iPads? IT'S TOO DAMN EXPENSIVE! C'mon guys...you're beginning to sound like CNET

    Its simple.

    We get:
MBP updates and maybe MB updates
    10.4.8
    Movie Store
6G iPod (not touchscreen) & Nano updates
One More Thing....Media streaming device (Cube re-incarnation) or headless tower (unlikely)

    Thats it.

    Merom vs. Yonah Benchmarks (http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/showdoc.aspx?i=2808)

Cry me a river if you're using Yonah. Unless you need 64-bit or are encoding video/audio 24/7 on your laptop the gains aren't paramount.

The current iMac's can't even run games at 2560x1440 very well, so an even higher resolution? Unless they want to stick a desktop Radeon 6950 (at least) in there, it just wouldn't work. Surely Apple sees how important gaming is with iOS and Steam?

You don't have to run games at those high resolutions.

Since Fry's is already selling Sony ATAPI Blu-ray burners for $750, why doesn't Apple see the selling opportunity as an offering on the Mac Pro BTO page? They dont even offer a $120 Plextor SATA DVD Burner on that page yet. Seems like they are being extremely conservative about adopting the next generation of Para-Superdrives. It's a conundrum to me.

For whatever reason, Apple seems to not want to endorse Blu-ray nor HD-DVD yet by not offering either one. Guess they're not sure themselves which they think will be best for us in the long run or which one will win in the marketplace? I am confused about what's going on on this front.

Speaking personally, I'm not terribly interested in either right now.

Having said that, is there a (big enough) market for it? Stand-alone player sales have been pretty lacklustre, with HD-DVD outperforming Blu-Ray, but even it isn't doing wonderfully. The large capacity of the writable disc would be nice but the black media is too expensive to be worthwhile right now.

I guess it's possible they won't until they have playback software ready for OS X -- which would likely mean around the time of Leopard, I guess? It might make more sense then, unless you think Blu-Ray (or HD-DVD) are going to be big this "Holiday Season"? That would certainly change everything...

Next year might be the one to go for, esp. if the PS3 looks being the big seller for Christmas 2007... it also gives them time to pick which to offer, be it HD-DVD or Blu-Ray (or offer both?) depending upon the fortunes of either/both. I doubt their comments on supporting Blu-Ray thus far are terribly binding (tho the MS-based environment used by HD-DVD might be a deal-killer...).

And Amazon thinks crippling ioS compatibility will be good business? FAIL.

Since iOS is increasingly becoming a smaller market share in mobile phones over Android based phones; I'd say there isn't much point catering for iOS. You may as well say that the fact that there is no Atari version that it's a fail.

No doubt that an iOS app will be on the way, or a third party dev will make one that works. Either way, iOS isn't a priority.

I can tell you that based on my experience, most of what you described simply isn't true. I don't know how else to say it. If I tried to respond point by point, it would take all day to explain all the concepts clearly.

I'd encourage you to try to explain why it "simply isn't true".

There is little value in merely making that claim. Actually backing it up with evidence is called for.

Don't worry about taking all day to explain the concepts. Considering the number of meaningless posts (many of them mine) that littler this forum, deeper analysis of this issue would be a refreshing change of pace.

No thanks, that would use a bunch of my 30gb monthly limit (no other options for broadband where i live). I definately would prefer a usb stick or a dvd. At least if its download only I hope they make it easy for me to burn to a standard size disc

on the Macrumors live feed Steve said new announcements coming in the week or next week. Any comments?
Yeah, at 10.24am on the MRL feed, though it was slightly ambiguous. Engadget also picked up on this but gave more detail - it's new universal applications that are being announced this week:

10:24AM - "We had a sixth major release that we don't get much credit for. Tiger on Intel. Porting an OS is is no easy task. And our software team did a great job. They made it look really easy which has enabled this amazing transition. 86 million lines of source code that was ported to run on an entirely new architecture with zero hiccups. Along the way, we created a way to run universal applications that run on PowerPC and Intel. I'm pleased to report that there are more than 3,000 universal applications and we at Apple would like to say, thank you, thank you guys. "You guys have done a phenomenal job and there are a lot more being announced at the developer conference this week."

I can understand Apple's concern here it could give the impression to an uneducated user that it is OK to jailbreak their phone

It is ok to jailbreak your phone. There isn't the slightest thing wrong with doing so.

Cloud based services will require mobile phone operators to change their pricing structures or see lots of dissapointed customers.

O2 UK - 24 month contract 35pm, right now = 1000 SMS's, 600 minutes, 500MB data. I'd far rather see 500SMS's, 300 minutes, 1.5GB data... but of course, the SMS and minutes cost them next to nothing vs. data costs...

I love my MobileMe! I don't care if it goes free, but they better not slack on support for it and features if they make it free.

Also, I just purchased a new year, they better give me my money back if they make this free anytime soon!:D

Android has been shown (http://thenextweb.com/google/2011/04/21/its-not-just-the-iphone-android-stores-your-location-data-too/) to also gather location information, but the database is limited to a much smaller list of entries and is regularly wiped by the system. Jobs' email seems to explicitly claim, however, that Google's location information is used to track users while Apple's is not.

Umm, Android's on-phone database might be smaller, but the phone sends all your location data to Google several times an hour tied to a unique identifier, where I'm sure the database is unlimited. And even if you trust Google with that data, they've been hacked before.

The only way anyone gets your iPhone data is if they steal your phone and you don't do a remote wipe in time. Or if they steal your computer and you don't encrypt backups.

How do you know this. Are you some type of design tester for intel?
What is really going to help merom on the Mac are the SSE units. It has three to yonah's one . Mac OS X makes a lot better use of SIMD units than windows.

The 400 series celerons aren't that slow. They're more or less a Core Solo with a smaller cache.

well i just placed my order for a 15" MBP 2.0 base model w/ an iPod 60GB

i chatted with a rep and pointed out that i have 14 days to return. i have 30 days to submit the iPod rebate (which requires a upc cut from MBP box)

so my status shows ship date of the 19th and arrival of the 26th!

so kinda in a pickle with dates but the 60GB will only cost me $120 in the end.

BTW, Im a first time mac buyer even though ive used em for years at work!
