I was thinking of upgrading my August 08 iMac to 10.7 when it releases, but have some software that I am not sure will work and dont want to lose in the upgrade and cant really afford to upgrade the software.
Does Vmware Fusion 3 work, Adobe CS 3, and Microsoft Office Student edition 2008 work on 10.7 Dev preview 2?
Thank you.

I'm trying to run an MBox 2 on this MacBook and getting nowhere so far. I'm also concerned about the lack of FireWire port, but it seems that I could save audio files on the internal HD or a USB HD.

The obvious upgrades would be HD iSight camera and 2 thunderbolt ports (so you can daisy chain the display). However, I wouldn't be surprised if Apple incorporates some sort of hard drive or ssd storage into the cinema display. Since Thunderbolt can transmit both data and audio/video, it would be awesome if the display can also act as an external hard drive.

The 170 is a great computer, but not particularly rare. In mint condition, perhaps someone is willing to shell out a bit more. I'd say normally about $20, but mint, perhaps $40? Most batteries aren't working well these days, so not having one isn't necessarily a big deal. Although the machine is a lot more physically balanced with one installed - it tends to rock backwards if one isn't there.
The G3 I'd just donate, honestly.

I have a point and shoot camera that takes decent (decent = nothing else to compare to) 720p video. It stores the video as AVDHC, ie mts files.
Up to now, I've been keeping a copy of the mts files, and loading them as needed into iMovie when I want to create a H.264 version for uploading or sharing. The conversion process takes some time, and there is probably some loss of quality, although not visible in normal use.
Just recently I realized that the codec of the video in the mts is already H.264, while the audio codec is ac3 (which isn't supported on Apple s/w). I had the idea that if I could pull out the H.264 as is and re-encode the audio as aac and store them in an mp4 container, I could continue using the reencoded file as backup and eg in FrontRow. (By the way, yes, I've tried and VLC plays the mts files, but I'm after ease of use here - ie spousal acceptance)
Handbrake reencodes the mts as mp4, with two audio streams, ac3 and aac, but also reencodes the video with some loss of quality, so I turned to ffmpeg.
I've compiled ffmpeg with aac and liblamemp3 support, and tried a few runs to get this right, but haven't succeeded in fixing the audio.
The following was a trial run - the H.264 video and the ac3 audio was copied exactly to a new mp4 container. This plays in VLC, but of course not in QT or FrontRow.
ffmpeg -i <file>.mts -vcodec copy -acode copy <file>.mp4
Since I compiled with aac support, the following re-encodes the audio to aac, results in a perfect video and plays in VLC, QT and FR, but with badly distorted, echo-y, audio
ffmpeg -i <file>.mts -vcodec copy <file>.mp4
The following results in perfect video that plays fine in VLC, but has no sound in QT or FR:
ffmpeg -i <file>.mts -vcodec copy -acode libmp3lame <file>.mp4
I would like to produce something similar to HandBrake, but with the video codec copied without re-encoding, and both aac (without distortion) and ac3 audio.
Does anyone know of a way of doing this?

I have a 51 inch HDTV. I was all set, as the earlier threads suggest, to buy the 12 inch powerbook so that I can run the DVI to my tv with blootooth mouse and keyboard. After reading for the last few weeks, I am scared to get the powerbook for so much money until the intel switch. I need a new computer and figure I will get a 12 new or 14 refurbished ibook. I know that running the S-Video to my TV will be of less quality and resolution than the DVI but I want to know if anyone has worked on their TV with this and what they think. It seems like the iBooks are the better value right now. I figure I will get one with my employee discount and sell it for 4 or 500 next year and grab the new powerbook. Im betting that the Intel switch is going to be balls out for Apple. Im guessing they bring out all the stops and start making this race with PC serious.

i do and when i tried to use internet on the bus without wifi, the screen would usually show that webtogo thing that you have to change settings (just to try it out when i first got an iphone). but now when i go on it doesn't block me from the internet anymore. like it lets me use it on the bus even though i never payed for web plan outside of wi-fi. and now when i check the online bill it says i used like .009 megabytes for example, at 1:30 am in the morning and other times when i don't use the internet. and i think they charge me a lot for 1 megabyte.
im just wondering does anyone's internet do this? is it my iphone or is it tmobile change their settings? thanks

Thanks a lot for the advise.
I think that Desktastic will do it. I will go to a friend with a Mac and try it.
January is my Switcher Date! I really look forward to it.!

well...I accept multiple forms of payment ;)
But yes its such an incredible machine. It can do so much...
In many cases I prefer it over G5 tower.
It's cheaper to upgrade!...with like 80 bucks you can max it out at 2 gigs of ram!

Is TinkerTool even made for this?
If you meant this (http://www.macworld.com/article/42469/2005/01/2waystreet.html) trick, then there is no need for TinkerTool, as you can enable "show hidden files" via Terminal, but that would only work with an iPod usable as disk drive, and the iPod touch does not have that feature, thus exPod (linked above) is enough.

Well, it seems to me that windows is mostly useless if I can't get on the internet. I need to use the Mac's wireless network to do this in my environment. So, do I need to use BC to do this? I have gotten tired of the slow Parallels' response with only 2GB max, and do most of my work anymore on Windoze.

I have an AFP mounted directory under /Volumes.
I mount the directory as a particular user.
I want to now give other users access to that directory but I get a permission denied.
The default permission is set to only let me read/write/execute on the directory, and even doing a chmod, I am unable to allow others access to it.
Is there perhaps a better way to mount a directory and every user access it?

Hello Macrumors,
I want to know what happens with iTunes music transfers...
If I connect my iPod to my friends laptop, sync my music using his laptop,
Can I then take those songs and transfer them ti my computer?
Also, is there anything else I needa do before?
All the best,

ebay, Kijiji, Craigslist, etc.
Research some older-model printers with that connector and just plug in the names as your search terms.

Well the first thing I'd say is, if you value your iPod, keep it away from things that can "squish" it. ;)
That being said, Otterbox is known for it's heavy duty cases. Maybe one of these will help. http://www.otterbox.com/apple-ipod-cases/apple-ipod-cases,default,sc.html
Also since you don't want a cover, this might be a bit over kill but still useful:

GFXstatus works for the most part. Spotlight indexing was fixed for me after a reboot. I had a suspicion my 11 day time to index was wrong :-)
Mine indexed in about 3hrs, then on reboot started indexing again. Both times taking 83% of my CPU.

You probably downloaded the Windows drivers that will have to be installed after you install windows.
Sounds like your optical disk is defective.
